OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - There typically aren’t high expectations for the hitters at the bottom of the line up in the eight and nine holes. Brice Matthews and Griffin Everitt have their own idea about that, combined they were six for nine, with six runs batted in and scored five runs.

Some serious production where Northwestern likely least expected it, the Huskers won the series opener at Hawks Field 12-2. That result combined with Michigan’s win against Indiana puts Big Red on top of the conference by a half-game at 24-11.

Cade Povich threw seven shutout innings without walking any batters. He gave up just two hits and struck out five.

Everitt delivered a career-high four RBIs. Matthews enjoyed his first career three-hit game as a Husker. The two teams will meet again tomorrow at 2 PM for game two of the three-game series.
