ASHLAND, Neb. (WOWT) - The Nebraska State Patrol confirmed the identity of a man killed Thursday morning in a crash on Interstate 80.

Patrick Cunningham, 54, of South Bend, was riding a motorcycle westbound on I-80 when a semi-truck with a tanker trailer tried to pass another semi-tractor-trailer near mile marker 423, according to the NSP release Thursday afternoon. The first truck made contact with the second, pushing it into a van in the left lane, then the driver of the first truck over-corrected, hitting Cunningham.

Cunningham was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

The crash happened at about 6:40 a.m., according to the NSP release. NSP tweeted just before 9 a.m. that a person in the crash had died.

Authorities diverted traffic off of I-80 at Mahoney State Park to Highway 6, but delays mounted there as well.

“Interstate 80 was closed in the area for westbound traffic for approximately six hours,” the release states.

NSP is still investigating the crash with the help of the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.
