Olympic Swim Trials’ biggest surprise yet: Simone Manuel won’t defend 100m free gold medal
OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Simone Manuel has one shot left to make the Olympic team after coming up two one-hundredths of a second short in the 100-meter freestyle.
That was in one of the two semifinals.
She raced in the first heat and finished fourth, it wasn’t until after the second heat that reality set in. She was ninth fastest and only the top eight will swim in the final Friday night. She will not have the opportunity to defend her Olympic gold medal in Tokyo. Manuel came to the trials ranked seventh in the event.
Simone still has a chance to make it to Tokyo in the 50-meter free, she won silver in the event five years ago in Rio.
Caeleb Dressel locks up his spot on the team with a win in the 100-meter free by more than three-tenths of a second in front of Zach Apple who will also make the trip to Japan. Dressel’s time of 47.39 is the second fastest in the world this year.
