LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – Lincoln Police are investigating the murder of a 60-year-old man found in a field early Wednesday morning.
According to LPD, officers found the Lincoln man near 3rd and P around 2 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene and had injuries to his neck from what police describe as a “bladed weapon.” Police Chief Theresa Ewins said a possible weapon was found nearby.
Chief Ewins did not expand further on the investigation but did say there is no threat to the public and no arrest has been made. LPD is still determining a timeline of events, what led to the homicide, and is interviewing witnesses and “persons of interest.”
The crime scene is located in a high foot-traffic area that includes Community Action and The People’s City Mission.
People’s City Mission CEO Pastor Tom Barber said the man, who hasn’t been identified yet by LPD, stayed at the mission on and off for years.
“He’s one of the guys that comes to us that, you know, often lives on the streets,” Barber said. “Very, very sad. We know him. He was a good guy.”
Barber noted the man didn’t stay at the mission Tuesday night and his death hits the mission and it’s people hard.
“Even though he may not have something anywhere else, we’ll do something here in which guys can come and pay tribute to them.”
LPD urges anyone with information or that may have captured video of the incident to call the non-emergency number at 402-441-6000 or Crime Stoppers at 402-475-3600.
